CHAIRMAN'S MESSAGE

Cheryl Angeles, Chairman, Redwood City/San Mateo Chamber of Commerce

Recently I searched my membership directory for a cellular phone company (Senator Simitian's cell phone law takes effect in July 2008), a nursery (needed some new plants, etc.), and a framing company so I could frame some pictures taken on my summer vacation in Europe. We do not have members in those categories! It got me thinking- what other types of companies do we not have? We cannot shop with them if there not in our membership directory! Whom do you do business with? Are they Chamber Members? If not, get them signed up! The Membership Drive is not over yet!

Speaking of summer vacations, I had a lovely trip with some of my fellow Chamber Members! We traveled to Italy, France, Monaco, and Spain. I had my picture taken in front of the Chamber of Commerce in Corsica. Thanks to a new Chamber Member - Janie Gregory with Willow Glen Travel for planning it all. I have wonderful memories of the trip (and a few extra pounds!)

The Progress Seminar ReMixed was a huge success! We had some wonderful speakers like Ray Bingham, Managing Director, General Atlantic, Sean Foote, Labrador Ventures, Carl Guardino, Silicon Valley Leadership Group, Sass Somekh, President Emeritus, Novellus, Ted van der Linden, DPR Construction and Steve Stenton, RMW Architecture and Interiors. I wanted to send out a HUGE thank you to John Bruno, Redwood City Industrial Saltworks for putting together some wonderful timely panels and Sponsors, Allied Waste Services, Norcal Waste Systems, San Mateo Credit Union, Stanford Hospital & Clinics, Comcast, Federal Shredding, PG&E, Port of Redwood City and Saf Keep Storage.

Our Chamber Invitational Golf Tournament is slated for October 1. The signups have been great. We could use some additional auction items. If you have anything to donate please contact the Chamber Office.

The July Mixer was great! There were many new faces thanks to John Nelson and his staff! They made over 300 phone calls and it paid off. I talked to a gentleman who has been a member for over a year and it was the first event he had attended. I hope to see him again. John Nelson, Coldwell Banker did a lovely job of barbequing (he used a secret recipe, which he will not divulge). Aili Ice, Floral Design was an excellent host. They do beautiful work so call them if you are looking for something unique. They also deliver floral arrangements.

Leadership Redwood City-Belmont-San Carlos, is off to a good start. 40 committed community members have already signed up. It looks like we are going to sell out, for the 3rd consecutive year. If you have not attended the Leadership Program, it is a fantastic program and gives you exposure to community leaders and government officials.

Yes, I did a little shopping this summer. I shopped with my regulars but also tried some new members as well: The Concept Genie, Sushia House, See's Candies, Bradley & Associates, The Human Element, Nob Hill, Cost Plus and Woodside Bakery & Cafe. I will be broke at the end of my term, but am having a very fun time shopping with you all!
