Golden Apples Awarded
Comcast and Styles Hair Design will each receive the Chamber’s
Golden Apple Award this year for their commitment to local
education.
The Golden Apple Awards will be awarded this month at the
Chamber’s Annual Awards and Recognition Banquet, January
29 at Hotel Sofitel. The Golden Apple recognizes businesses
that strive to make a difference in Redwood City
Schools.
212 San Mateo County Comcast employees and their families
participated in 3 volunteer projects as a part of the largest
one-day volunteer effort in the company’s history. Local
Comcast volunteers donated a total of 1,700 hours or more
than 70 days of service in just one day.
Fair Oaks School Principal, Katherine Rivera, nominated Comcast
for their donation of all construction and landscaping materials
to transform a portion of their school yard. They landscaped
5000 square feet of school property including the addition
of 14 tons of crushed granite for new walkways. Rivera said,
“They created a warm and inviting court yard where the
children are now delighted to sit and eat.”
Maria Peterson, Sole Proprietor of Styles Hair Design has
been a volunteer at Clifford School for 10 years. She is a
classroom volunteer helping students learn math and reading.
She has been Stage Manager for Middle School for three musical
productions and a parent chaperone for the 8th Grade Washington
D.C. trip. Peterson organized the after school “snack
shack” for Parents’s Club at which she helps out
for several hours on the
one day she does not have to work.

San Mateo Credit Union, Bay Area Gardeners Association, Oracle
Corporation, Lyngso Garden Materials, Sequoia Hospital, Alexis
Atchinson, DDS, Telogy, Pantano Properties, Burger King, Kaiser
Permanente in demonstrating what first year recipient DHL
said
“Education is Everyone’s responsibility.”
