The Chamber Endorses Measure A

REDWOOD CITY, CA - October 5, 2004 On November 2, 2004, voters in San Mateo County will be asked to approve a reauthorization of the Measure A half-cent transportation sales tax. A “Yes” vote on Measure A assures that our highway, road and transportation infrastructure will expand and improve to meet the demands of County businesses and residents into the future. Measure A will improve safety, reduce traffic, improve local highway and roads and provide diverse transit options such as employee shuttles, BART, Caltrain and ferry service. All without changing our sales tax rate one cent.

The Measure A Transportation Expenditure Plan before voters has been approved by the San Mateo County/Cities Government Association (C/CAG), the San Mateo County Transportation Authority Board of Directors, the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC), the County Board of Supervisors and every city council in San Mateo County. The Chamber's Government Relations Committee and the Chamber Board of Directors have both reviewed Measure A carefully and voted to support this important measure.

I believe San Mateo County's ability to attract new business and retain existing employers is tied to our ability to relieve traffic congestion and keep people and products moving. Measure A will raise through direct and matching funds approximately $2 billion and fund transportation projects in the following ways:

  • Transit & Paratransit – 30% for a total of $450 million
  • Highways – 27.5% for a total of $412.5 million
  • Local Streets and Road Improvements – 22.5% for a total of $337.5 million
  • Caltrain Grade Separations – 15% for a total of $225 million
  • Bicycles & Pedestrians – 3% for a total of $45 million
  • Alternative Congestion Relief Programs – 1% for a total of $15 million

Please join the Chamber and vote YES on Measure A on November 2. If you would like more information about Measure A, please call (650) 794-2000 or visit...www.YESonMeasureA.com
