Golden Apples Awarded

Sequoia Hospital Health and Wellness and Comcast will receive the Chamberšs Golden Apple Awards this year for their commitment to local education. The Golden Apples will be awarded this month at the Chamber's Annual Dinner and Awards Recognition Banquet, Thursday, January 25 at the Hotel Sofitel. The Golden Apple recognizes businesses that strive to make a difference in Redwood City Schools.

Nominated by Jan Christensen, Superintendent for the Redwood City School District, Sequoia Hospital was chosen for their partnership with the Redwood City School District: Make Time for Fitness.

Make Time for Fitness is a multi-faceted program to encourage healthy eating, physical activity and avoidance of tobacco products. To promote healthy behaviors, Sequoia Hospital Health and Wellness implements Make Time for Fitness in partnership with the San Francisco Giants and the Redwood City School District. One component of the program is the Kids Are Giants Too! Day. Accompanied by nearly 100 volunteers, 1,000 fourth graders from 13 participating schools attend a special day in May at A T & T Park. For some students, it is their first time riding a train and visiting San Francisco.

Also, Sequoia Hospital Health and Wellness and the Giants partnered to design the Make Time for Fitness walking courses on 14 Redwood City School Campuses. The courses are open for before-and-after-school community programs.

Nominated by the Principal at Hoover School, Gregory Land, Comcast Cable was chosen to receive the 2nd Golden Apple Award. An amazing effort, Comcast Cable went to the Hoover campus to help finish the school garden, help put in trees and plants creating a new path for the front of the school. Over 100 volunteers put hours of preparation to map out how the campus would look, purchase plants, bushes, planter boxes, gloves, and hoses. Yards of dirt and ground cover showed up and all the equipment needed to cut holes in the asphalt for the vines which were planted and to create the actual path.

They donated shovels, trowels, rakes, and watering cans to help the students to maintain and work in the garden areas.

Sequoia Hospital Health and Wellness and Comcast are both 2nd time recipients of the Golden Apple Award which exemplifies their ongoing commitment to education and what great partnerships can accomplish.
