GOLDEN APPLES AWARDED
Costco Wholesale and 1-800-DryClean, co-owners Nina and Keith Kadera will receive the Chamber’s Golden Apple Awards this year for their commitment to local education. The Golden Apples will be awarded this month at the Chamber’s Annual Dinner and Awards Recognition Banquet, Thursday, January 24 at the Hotel Sofitel. The Golden Apple recognizes businesses that strive to make a difference in Redwood City Schools.
Costco was chosen for their partnership with the Redwood City School District particularly with the special relationship they have developed with Hoover School.
They help the Hoover Family Center with their backpack program providing 500 each year filled with all the essentials that students need. They are always ready to help Hoover with supplies for all their activities incuding "Coffee with the Principal" "High School Preparation Seminar", "ELAC Meetings", "Parent Pot Luck", "Halloween Party". "Student Council Meetings", "Anti Gang School Task Force Meetings" and the "Holiday Pot Luck." Through their own and employee contributions totaling $19,000 to the United Way they help fund the Boys and Girls Club after school programs, tutoring programs for Middle School Latino Students, the Parent Engagement program in North Fair Oaks School and the "Start Now"; program – teaching reading skills to 1st and 2nd graders in Redwood City.
In the small business category 1-800-DryClean, co-owners Keith and Nina Kadera were chosen to receive the 2nd Golden Apple Award. Each spring for twenty years Keith and Nina Kadera have been raising money for, and organizing a 10-day backpacking and science exploration trip to the Grand Canyon for 100 students from
Kennedy Middle School and McKinley Institute of Technology. Keith is a former PTA President at Kennedy and was a parent chaperone on that very first trip twenty years ago.
Both large and small business Golden Apple Award Recipients, Costco Wholesale and 1-800-DryClean co-owners Keith and Nina Kadera exemplify what the award means with their ongoing commitment to education showing what great partnerships can accomplish.
